Help Protect Wild Rainbow Trout in the Winooski River
|
Lawton Weber, of the Central Vermont TU Chapter
& Pleasant Valley Fly Fishing Guides, as
well as author of "Vermont Trout Streams (Northern Cartographic)" recently brought the following to
our attention.
|
"In order to protect, retain and potentially enhance the wild adult rainbow trout population in the
Winooski River below Bolton Dam, it is critical that adult spawning fish be allowed to spawn
successfully without angling mortality before dropping back to the Winooski mainstem.
One way to do this is to close critical spawning tributaries of the Winooski, such as Ridley, Joiner
and Preston Brooks during their spawning season."
|
To this end, Lawton is circulating petitions with the goal of collecting signatures to then forward
to the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, urging
them to keep these critical spawning tributaries closed until May 31.
After all, similar protections are already afforded to the Willoughby and Black Rivers to the north,
and the White River to the south. And with the Winooski being one of the most heavily fished
streams in the state, the time has come for equal protection.
On Lawton's behalf, we're posting an
online version of his petition here. Please take a few
moments to lend your support.

Good things - like beautiful wild rainbows - are worth the wait.
Don't you agree? ...
Then say so.
